Windows and doors in Barnsley

New windows and doors in Barnsley, measured, priced and fitted by the same two people. Luke and Dale work right across the borough, from the streets around the town centre to the Dearne villages in the east and the stone villages towards Penistone.

For windows and doors in Barnsley, L&D are a short drive away in Hoyland, just south of the town. Luke and Dale have fifteen years in the trade and their own company since April 2026, and they do every part of a job themselves: the visit, the measuring, the price and the fitting. Their 19 Google reviews are all five stars.

Barnsley is a big borough with a lot of different houses in it. Brick terraces and semis make up much of the town and the old pit villages to the east. Further west, towards Penistone and the hills, there is more stone, and the weather comes in harder. A window that suits one is not always right for the other, which is why nothing is ordered until it has been seen.

Do you need planning permission to replace windows in Barnsley?

For most houses, no. The Planning Portal says new windows and doors on a house do not usually need planning permission if they look similar to the ones the house was built with. A new bay window is the exception: it counts as an extension and may need permission.

The answer changes in three cases.

  • A listed building. Listed building consent is needed for any significant work, inside or out. You can check whether a house is listed on Historic England's online list.
  • A conservation area. Barnsley has 18 of them. Three are in the town itself: Regent Street, Church Street and Market Hill; Victoria Road; and Huddersfield Road. The rest take in places such as Worsbrough, Darfield, Cawthorne, Penistone, Thurlstone and Elsecar. The council says permission may be needed in a conservation area for work such as putting in new windows.
  • A flat. If you own a flat on a lease, the windows may belong to the freeholder, and you may need their permission or the management company's before anything changes.

Not sure if your house is covered?

Barnsley Council's building conservation team answer questions about conservation areas and listed buildings on 01226 772576. Ring them before anything is ordered. It costs nothing to ask, and a window taken out because it should never have gone in costs a lot.

How do you choose between window firms in Barnsley?

Most people get two or three prices for a job like this, and they should. The prices are hard to compare on their own, so it helps to ask every firm the same few questions.

Questions worth asking any window firm

  • Who comes to measure? A salesman, a surveyor or the person who will fit it. With L&D it is Luke and Dale.
  • Who fits it? The firm's own people or a subcontracted team you never meet. L&D fit every job themselves.
  • Are the photos theirs? Stock photos show you nothing. Every photo on this site is L&D's own work.
  • What do their customers say? Not the star rating alone. Read what the reviews actually praise.
  • Is the date firm? Keeping to the agreed day is what L&D's reviews praise more than anything.

Are you a builder or renovating a house in Barnsley?

Not every job comes straight from a homeowner. Luke and Dale also take on the glazing on building and renovation work, where they are one trade among several on a site. On those jobs what matters is arriving on the day the openings are ready, fitting, and leaving the site clean for the next trade. If you are running a job in Barnsley and need the windows and doors done, ring and talk it through.

Which job do you need?

If you know what you are after, these pages go into each one properly: composite doors, replacement windows, bifold and sliding doors, misted glass replacement, conservatory roof replacement and new conservatories and garden rooms. Outside Barnsley, see where else in South Yorkshire they work. Otherwise, 07487 719666 is the number to describe the job to.

Barnsley questions

Do you cover Penistone and the villages to the west of Barnsley?

Yes. L&D cover the whole of South Yorkshire, and Penistone, Thurlstone, Cawthorne and the villages around them are all part of it. Houses up there are more often stone, which is worth mentioning when you ring.

Can you give a price without coming out?

Not a proper one. A price for windows or doors depends on the exact sizes, the state of the openings and what is behind the old frames, so Luke and Dale come out and measure first. The visit is free.

How do I find out if my house is listed?

Search your address on the National Heritage List for England, which Historic England keeps online and is free to use. If the house is on it, the whole building is listed, including the parts you might not expect, such as the back.

Can I choose a door colour to match my windows?

Yes. Composite doors come in a long list of colours. Doors in Luke and Dale's own photographs include grey, black, navy, green and white. If the windows are being done at the same time, the door and the windows can be matched as one job.

Thinking about a door, windows or a conservatory in Barnsley?

A front door, a houseful of windows, or a conservatory you have stopped using. Send it over and we will come out, measure up and give you a price for it.
